Allah says: “On that day, nothing will benefit the human being, neither wealth nor children, only the one who brings Allah a sound heart.” A sound heart is one that is free of defects and spiritual blemishes. Though the spiritual heart is centered in the physical heart, the heart being referred to here is the spiritual heart, not the physical heart. In ancient Chinese medicine, the heart houses what is known as “Chen” which is “a spirit.” The Chinese character for “thinking,” “thought,” “love,” “virtue,” and “intending to listen” all contain the ideogram for the heart.

This rings so true, when things don’t go our way we show our true colors. It’s easy to be a gentleman when things are going well for you.

But how do we act when we aren’t doing so well?

I’m seeing this recurring need for honest introspection and deep self examination when it comes to our character. When we’re angry, broke, sick, heartbroken, defeated or disappointed it’s our opportunity to show our character and to come through it all strong, patient, giving, loving and grateful with Allah’s Tawfeeq and Mercy inshallah.
